How To Start Blogging

Posted on July 23, 2007

I recently got a friend interested in affiliate marketing. She is interested in making money online and I was telling her about how some people make loads of money blogging. Of course, she wanted to know how she could start blogging, so this post is for her.

Most affiliate marketers who are new to internet marketing are interested in making money and somehow thats the only thing they think they know what to write about. Don’t think you can start a blog on making money online if you really don’t know the first thing about making money online. If you want to track your progress, fine. I’m blogging about my progress and success with affiliate marketing and how Wealthy Affiliate is helping me to get where I want to be.

With blogging, you get to tell people whats on your mind, air your views from your perspective so its just like talking to your friends as opposed to a website where you have to be more formal in your writing. People will feel more comfortable knowing that there is a person behing the words on a blog. Blogging will help you build a name in the internet marketing world and people will come back and read and interact by leaving comments if you they like what you write about.

So how do you start blogging?

The first thing you need to do is find what you want to blog about. Find something that you know a lot about that you can talk about all day. If  you decide to blog about something you don’t know much about or something that doesn’t interest you, you will find that you don’t know what to write about and your blog may end up abandoned with only a few posts.

You may know a lot about games, start a gaming blog. Or music. Or fashion. Celebrity gossip. Whatever you interest. Its also a good idea to think before hand how you are going to make money from your blogging efforts. Are there affiliate programs? It is not a good idea however to start blogging just for the money.

You can start blogging by getting a free blog from Blogger.com or Wordpress.com . There are other free blog resources but these are the most popular ones. It is also a good idea if you have a few bucks to spare to buy a domain name and hosting and set up a wordpress blog. This is better as you have control over what you can do with your blog. You can also have it as an addon to your website if  you decide to start one.

Next you want to give your blog a unique name and url. Keywords are really helpful in affiliate marketing online and you blog could benefit if it has keywords in the url and name so take that into consideration.

After you have finished setting up your blog, you will want to make your first post. Surprisingly, this is the part that holds back a lot of first time bloggers. Just tell them about yourself and what your blog is going to be about and you will be fine. Don’t worry about how long the post is, just get it done. Once that is done you will find it easy to make your other posts and blogging will become easier. Try to make a post everyday if you can. Search engines love regularly updated content and your blog may benefit if updated regularly. If you cant post everyday, try to make a post at least a few time a week.

Keywords are important and you should include them in your blog post title and in the post itself. You may even find that you have a #1 or first page ranking in the search engine for your target keywords. Another thing you should do is find blogs with similar themes and leave comments on them with a link back to your blog. The owner of the blog may even put you on their blogroll if they find your blog interesting.

You can later add affiliate banners and links to your post to monetize your blog and make money. As an affiliate marketer, I believe you must and should have a blog so start blogging today if you aren’t already doing so.
